In a article published by World Journal, the largest Chinese-language newspaper in the United States, Dr. Liao provided a commentary on the 2017 Guideline for High Blood Pressure in Adults. In 2017, the AHA and ACC set new guidelines for the management and treatment of high blood pressure, which lowered standards for normal blood pressure to 120/80 mm Hg and the mark for lifestyle changes and potential medication use to 130/80 mm Hg.

Dr. Liao notes that the new standard was created primarily based on the SPRINT trial, where there were few Asians participating in the trial. He further believes that many clinicians may want to see more papers that replicate the findings of the SPRINT trial. Other countries following the lead of the AHA and ACC may also want to be careful in extrapolating the results of the SPRINT trial to their population, due to genetic variation. Ultimately, Dr. Liao believes that the best way to prevent hypertension is through diet; for Asian-Americans, he jokes, you may want to cut down on soy sauce.
